You will learn here how to create new metrics for the calculation of the spend: Fixed CPM, %Markup, Cap Spend, Fix CPM + Cap spend. The custom spend will be created along with related metrics: CPM, CPC, CPA, ROAS, COS, Cost of sales, Margin, Margin %.

📌 Learn how to set up Ad Server spend here. This feature allows you to create new metrics a CPM and a maximum spend (optional) for campaigns and placements operated in your adserver when the media spend is unknown or not set.

How to access Custom Spend?

  1. Click your avatar at the bottom of the page, then select Workspace Settings

  2. From the navigation bar, select Metrics in the Workspace section.

How to create a custom spend?

  1. Click Create metric at the top right of the page

2. Configure the custom spend details:

  • Name the custom spend, e.g. Client spend

  • Add a description to provide essential context for other users and for SpyneAI

  • Enter a prefix, e.g. $,€,£

  • Enter a suffix, e.g. %, kg

  • Decimal places. The number of decimal places to display by default is 2.

3. Select Custom Spend

Set up rules

  1. Click “+Add rues”

  2. Specify the channel or channels (Meta, Google, Tiktok, etc.) to which the rule should be applied. You can create different rules for each channel or use the same across multiple channels.

  3. Click on “+Add step”

  4. Set up the conditions the rules apply to.

    Each rule consists of the ‘when’ part specifies which campaign/ ad group/ ad the rule applies to, and the ‘then’ part specifies the expected results of the rule.

When

This part is optional, it specifies which level name and conditions the rules apply to.

Define in which name should the system look for information: Channel type, Campaign Name, Account Name, Account Id, Ad Group name, Ad Group Id, Ad name, Ad id.

Then, set up the conditions.

Field value

  • Rules are applied to the field values. Several ways to identify the values that you want the system to extract.

    • Is in

      • It checks if the value matches any of the listed options.

    • Is not in

      • It checks if the value does not match any of the listed options.

Multiple conditions

  • You can combine multiple conditions with the “+ Add condition” button. Conditions can be combined as AND (both conditions must be true).

No condition

  • If you want the “then” without any condition, you can remove the “when” by clicking on the grey cross on the right.

Then

This part is mandatory, it specifies what the action / result of the rule should be.

Fix CPM

  • Applied to all impressions of the selected campaign / ad group / ad

  • This is especially useful for Ad Server campaigns imported directly from the adsserver where the price has not been specified in the adserver

  • This can also be used for agencies and trading desk and publishers selling at a fixed CPM rate

Cap Spend

  • Applied where only the spend up to this limit will be accounted for. If your campaign spends more, your custom spend will remain capped. But the impressions will still be accounted for.

Fix CPM + Cap spend

  • Combine Fix CPM and Cap spend

% Markup

  • A % of mark up is applied to a the gross spend of the selected items to create a spend with margin.

Adserver spend

  • Create new metrics a CPM and a maximum spend (optional) for campaigns and placements operated in your adserver when the media spend is unknown or not set. Learn how to set up Ad Server spend here.

Multiple actions

You can add other subsequent actions, by adding new actions with the button “+ Add action”.

Fallback

If no rules above match, the metric value will be the value of spend retrieved from advertising platform(s).

Select calculated metrics to generate

You need to select at least one metric to continue (e.g. ROAS, CPA, CPC). Pick the metrics that matter most to you. Other calculated metrics won’t be shown right away, but you can add them anytime.

Please ensure all required fields are filled out correctly, and there are no validation errors. You need to select at least one calculated metric to continue (e.g., ROAS, CPA, CPC).

How to test rules and check the results?

You can check how the rules will apply to your custom spend over the last 30 days.

Click the button Test at the top right of the page. The test results will appear above the rules section.

It will show you which campaigns/ ad groups/ ads (depending on your rule settings) are applied, along with their sources, the custom spend, non-custom spend and impressions.

Publish custom spend

Click on the 'Create custom metric' button at the top right of the page.

The custom spend will be created along with related metrics: CPM, CPC, CPA, ROAS, COS, Cost of sales, Margin, Margin %.

📌 Keep in mind

  • If you want to use this custom spend instead of the default spend metric, you can turn off the old one in Metric Settings.

  • If you’ve already created reports, don’t forget to update them with your new metric and KPIs.

How to manage a custom spend ?

After the custom spend is published, it will appear in the table under the Custom Metrics section. To edit it, click the metric name in the table.

Or by selecting the ‘…’ menu in the header, you can edit, delete or duplicate the metric

Update custom spend in case of changes

Click "Update metric" if you have made changes. Or, click on "Discard changes" if you do not want to save the changes.
