💡 Tip: This feature is especially useful if your campaigns, adgroups, or ads follow a naming convention with separators (e.g. underscores), and you only need certain segments for your reports.
What is a short alias (slug name)?
A short alias (slug name) is a custom dimension created via Dimension Mapping. Instead of displaying the full campaign, adgroup, or ad name, Spyne extracts and combines parts of that name to generate a shorter, more readable label.
The principle is the same regardless of the level you choose : campaign, adgroup, or ad name. The example below uses the campaign level, but the method applies identically to the other levels.
For instance :
Original campaign name | Short alias |
FR_Awareness_Video_Q1_2025 | Awareness_Video |
US_Retargeting_Static_Q2_2025 | Retargeting_Static |
How to create a short alias (slug name)?
Step 1: Access Dimension Mapping
Click your avatar at the bottom of the page, then select Workspace Settings.
From the navigation bar, select Dimension Mapping in the Workspace section.
Step 2: Create a new dimension
Click Create dimension at the top right of the page.
Configure the dimension details:
Scope: ads by default (new dimension mapping version)
Name: e.g., Short Campaign Name (or Short Adgroup Name, Short Ad Name).
Description (optional): Add context for other users, e.g., "Shortened alias using segments 2 and 3 of the campaign name."
Step 3: Set up the extraction rule
Click + Add rule.
Select the channel the rule applies to (e.g., Snapchat, Meta, TikTok). You can create different rules per channel since naming conventions may vary.
In the Then section, configure the first extraction step:
Select Split value
Set the separator used in your campaign name (e.g.,
_for underscores)Enter the position of the segment you want to extract (e.g.,
2for the second segment)
Click + Add step to concatenate additional segments:
Add a Text value step and type the separator you want in the alias (e.g.,
_)Add another Split value step with the same separator, and enter the next position (e.g.,
3)
You can add as many steps as needed to build the alias that best fits your naming convention.
Step 4: Test the rule
Click Test to preview how your campaign names will be transformed. The result will show the short aliases generated by your rule, so you can validate before saving.
Tips
💡 Use different rules per channel
Campaign naming conventions often differ by platform. You can create one rule per channel within the same dimension, each with its own separator and segment logic.
💡 Reuse your short alias everywhere
Once created, the dimension is available throughout spyne: in charts, filters, goals, and spyneAI — just like any default dimension.
💡 Combine with the original Campaign Name
he alias dimension complements the original name (campaign, adgroup, or ad) — it doesn't replace it. You can keep both in your reports to maintain full traceability while showing cleaner labels in your charts.
